Terrestrial ecosystems diversity in protected areas.

Terrestial ecosystems are not evenly represented in protected areas (Sayre et al. 2020), as consequence of both natural and anthropic conditions. Here ecosystems diversity is expressed by Shannon index (SHDI) that takes into account both abundance and richness of ecosystems in each protected area.

Protected areas with higher SHDI tend to have higher number of different ecosystem types and/or the proportional distribution of area among ecosystem types is more equitable.
